Objectives: To introduce the unit on astronomy, activate prior knowledge, introduce some important facts about each planet, and then have the students learn to use their astronomy textbook. The students should also be able to engage in the class discussion to brainstorm words that have to do with space/astronomy.
Opening: To begin the unit I will start the students out with an activity to activate what prior knowledge they have about astronomy and space. I will give them a sheet of paper with the alphabet and under each letter will be a blank column for use to brainstorm as a class words that have to do with space/astronomy that being with that letter of the alphabet. Students are required to glue these sheets of paper into their scientists notebook.
Engagement: Next the students will engage in a powerpoint that introduces some important facts about each of the planets in our solar system and about space in general. The students will be required to take notes in their scientists notebook while the class discusses this new information. After the students are finished taking notes they will begin the task of using their Astronomy Student Guide and Source Book to find information in their text.
Closure: If the students do not finish the Astronomy Student Guide and Source book activity they will be asked to complete that task for homework as well as some reading in the text.
